Pakistan takes medal tally to 28, including 10 Gold

BEIJING—Due to outstanding performance of Pakistan’s Special Olympic squad Tuesday, they accumulated medals including five gold in eight out of nine sports disciplines in which Pakistan is competing in the Special Olympics World Summer Games here in Shanghai.
The only event in which Pakistan could not manage to get medal was football. After Tuesday’s competitions, Pakistan has so far accumulated 28 medals including 10 gold, 9 silver, and 9 Bronze medals.
Both Pakistani boys and girls continued their impressive run and added to their medal tally five more gold, as many silver and 6 more Bronze after today’s events.
The medal events in Athletics commenced today and First Gold was won by Pakistan in the Long Jump competition in Nozaira Fatima jumped to maximum length in F-09 division and won gold for country. Next Gold Medal came through young Sumeira Shafqat in 100 meters race in front of a huge crowed at Shanghai Stadium.
Pakistan’s Sundas Hameed and Syed Asad Kazmi won silvers in soft ball throw (an exclusive athletics event for special children).Whereas Bushra Batool and Shahid Husain accounted for silvers in Long Jump and 100 meters respectively.
Pakistan also won a bronze in 100 meter race as Shabbir Husain finished third while Zara Sheikh and Kiran finished fourth in Soft ball through and 100 meters respectively.
In Aquatics (Swimming) Pakistani players added two more gold to their credit. In 4X 25 meter relay Bilal Khan, Jasmin, Kainyat & Touqeer grabbed the gold.
Bilal was the main instrument in carving this result, as the initial lead he acquired for team could not be challenged by any other team during this competition.
Bilal was again very impressive when he won another gold for in 25 meter Back Stroke. Kainat also managed a bronze in 25 meters race. Pakistan will compete tomorrow in the finals of 25 meters race in which Bilal Khan, Kainat and Touqeer to take part.
In Badminton double events, Pakistan opened its account with a silver at the state of the art Buchen Stadium Shanghai. Waqas Javed & Imran Ahmed performed remarkably well and beat strong Japanese team in the last match 21-16, 21-14, while Shehla Naz & Zubi beat Great Briton in Girls doubles event and earned Bronze for her country. In Girls Singles event Shehla finished 5th.
In Table tennis Pakistan opened its account with a gold in Mixed doubles event. Pakistan won two and lost one match in the Bocce team events. They won against Barbados (16-9) and South Korea (16-6) and conceded defeat against Italy (9-16) in the league matches.
Pakistan will take on Italy for the top honor tomorrow. In Tennis in men’s Doubles event Pakistan’s, Kaleem and Rizwan Sheikh won Bronze while playing against Israeli pair, score in favor of Pakistan was 5-3,4-2. Tomorrow Pakistan is scheduled to play against Danial Cumming in the final of Mans Singles.
In Basket ball, Pakistan’s girl’s team beat China 15-11 and won bronze for the home and in boys event Pakistan beat India 14-8 and claimed a bronze.—Agencies
