No instructions for safety ordinance yet: Cheema

ISLAMABAD—The Spokesman of Interior Ministry Brig (Retd) Javed Iqbal
Cheema has said that no instructions for safety ordinance have so far
been received from government.
While addressing a press conference on Tuesday, he said that (However)
Benazir Bhutto would be given adequate security protocol when she
arrives in Pakistan, which includes bulletproof cars.
He also expressed government’s resolve to file a review petition
regarding Lal Masjid issue, and was quite satisfied over the performance
of security arrangements for recently held Presidential elections.
He also hoped that this would lay the precedence for peaceful holding of
general elections, and while expressing his deep felt reservations about
the law and order situation in Wazirstan, he said that efforts were
underway to control the volatile situation over there.
When conditions about the tribal belt were questioned, he advised the
media to contact DG, ISPR for a conducive reply. Replying to assorted
questions he said that a high-ranking meeting would be held between
Pakistan and India on 22nd Oct to consider the modalities for war
against terrorism.
Other issues like Samjotha Express tragedy and others would also be
discussed. He refuted that the administration, of Lal Masjid has been
handed over to some other party, and it belongs to the Auqaf department,
while it has been opened for prayers.
He said that inquiry into brutalities against journalists have not been
included as yet , and assured of action against those responsible.
The government and the security forces are vigorously pursuing a
three-pronged strategy to restore peace in the tribal areas, said
Interior Ministry spokesperson Brigadier (Retd) Javed Iqbal Cheema here
on Tuesday.
He said alongside action by the security forces against militants, the
government has stepped up efforts with the help of tribal elders to
contain and curb the activities of the militants elements. He said
strenuous steps are being taken to build up the capacity of the
political authorities and the local levis and other law enforcement
agencies. These efforts, he said, would hopefully bear desired results
in the near future.
To a question, he said situation in South Waziristan is improving and in
North Waziristan people are asking for a ceasefire. Cheema revealed that
the tribal have asked for intervention of Jirga. He hoped the people
would shun militant activities and peace would be brought to Waziristan
soon. |
