Pro-active approach for welfare of elderly urged
By City Reporter

ISLAMABAD—Non-Governmental Organizations (NOGs) in Pakistan should come forward to join international community for the welfare of elderly persons, said the President of the Geriatrics Care Foundation of Pakistan, Dr. Ra’ana Mahmood.
Talking to APP she has urged the government and conscientious members of society to launch practical moves for the welfare of the elderly.
“With the passage of time, we are losing the essence of our social values and religious strength regarding respect for our elders as we have lagged far behind in taking steps needed for the welfare and wellbeing of the elderly”, observed Dr. Ra’ana Mahmood.
“It is about the time that we could proceed ahead in a determined manner to reform the society by practically doing something for them rather than paying lip service only”, she added.
With reference to 17th International Day for the Older Persons which is observed all over the world, Dr. Ra’ana Mahmood said that there was a time when the elderly occupied a place of respect in the society and all resources were placed at their disposal by their families and social tiers. Highlighting the fact that with the passage of time, we have lost respect for elderly persons, she emphasized that “They need better and specialized health care; they need access to economic viability and they need a share in better life styles”.
She also highlighted the need to provide proper medical care and provision of any kind of entertainment and socializing facilities that are necessary for the elderly to carry on healthy lives.
