Army Chief, Gen Tariq to head JCSC

ISLAMABAD—President and supreme commander of armed forces General Pervez
Musharraf has promoted Lt Gen Ishfaq Pervez Kiani and Lt Gen Tariq
Majeed to the rank of general and general Ishfaq Pervez Kiani has been
appointed new army chief who will continue to perform the duties of vice
chief of army staff till general Pervez Musharraf relinquishes post of
army chief.
General Ishfaq Pervez Kiani will formally assume the responsibilities of
vice army chief on October, 8 and will take over the command of army
when president general Pervez Musharraf quits as army chief. General
Tariq Majeed has been appointed as chairman joint chiefs of staff
committee and he will assume charge of his new appointment on October, 8
because the incumbent chairman joint chiefs of staff committee general
Ehsan ul Haq and vice chief of army staff general Ahsan Saleem Hayat
will retire from their posts on completion of their service tenure.
Inter Services Public Relations (ISPR) has released details with respect
to these appointments. Military sources told Online general Ishfaq
Pervez Kiani and general Tariq Majeed are considered the most trusted
and close aides of president general Pervez Musharraf and both were
senior officers by virtue of their seniority. No general will stand
superseded due to these appointments.
Sources further told general Ishfaq Pervez Kiani had conducted
investigation into life attempts on president Musharraf and had
succeeded in reaching mastermind of these assassination attempts due to
his competence. He is also viewed as competent and active general among
western circles. He had served as chief of ISI earlier. General Tariq
Majeed is also ranked among the close and trusted aides of general
Musharraf and he had remained corps commander of Rawalpindi.
Prime Minister Shaukat Aziz on Tuesday showered tributes on the outgoing
Chairman Joint Chiefs of Staff Committee Gen. Ehsanul Haq and Vice Chief
of the Army Staff Gen. Ahsan Saleem Hayat for their valuable services
for the country and its armed forces in various capacities. |
