Lawyers’ observe strike, rally against violence

ISLAMABAD—The lawyers community throughout the country including in the federal capital observed strike and took out rally against police persecutions on lawyers and journalists on September 29 outside the Election Commission office and the Supreme Court.
The lawyers of Islamabad District Courts, Rawalpindi District Kachehri and High Court Bench observed complete strike, which piled miseries on the litigants, as their cases could not be heard for the third consecutive days.
The lawyers kept coming to the Supreme Court in groups and voiced slogans against the government. A protest demonstration was staged at Rawalpindi District Courts and later on a rally came out from the Kachehri Chowk, which taking rounds of different roads reached at the press club, where the lawyers expressed their solidarity with the journalists.
In Lahore lawyers community also observed protest day against police torture on journalists. The lawyers took out a rally from Aiwan-e-Adal till Punjab Assembly and staged a sit in in front of the Assembly chamber at Faisal Chowk.
The lawyers renewed their pledge to not to back away from any sacrifices for ending dictatorship. Journalists, activists of MMA, PTI and PML-N workers also joined in the rally.
Similarly in Karachi the lawyers boycotted case proceedings at Sindh High Court, Supreme Court Registry and five district courts of Karachi.
A general body meeting of Karachi Bar at the City Courts condemned violence against lawyers and journalists in Islamabad and Karachi.
Karachi Bar Secretary Naeem Qureshi was arrested when he reached Sindh High Court after general body meeting of lawyers. Police detained Qureshi at the back gate of the SHC premises.
Police had made stringent security measures on the protest day. In Peshawar the lawyers also completely boycotted the courts and took out a protest rally and said that time has come for the journalists and lawyers to struggle from a single platform against the doctorial rule of President Musharraf.
They also condemned the announcement of Maulana Fazal Ur Rehman of resignation from the assemblies on Oct 2 and said that he is not sincere and is in fact supporting President Musharraf.
