NA body takes strict notice of prisoner’s death

ISLAMABAD—National Assembly Standing Committee on Law, Justice and Human Rights, which held its meeting hereThursday, took strong exception to the death of a prisoner in District Jail Sheikhupura.
The meeting was presided over by Chairman Rai Mansab Ali Khanand attended beside others by Minister for Law, Justice and Human Rights Zahid Hamid, Minister of State for Law, Justice and Human Rights Chaudhry Shahid Akram Bhinder and Minister for ParliamentaryAffairs Dr Sher Afgan Khan Niazi. According to report submitted with committee, a jail inmate Arshad Sadique died in District jail, Sheikhupura as a result of extreme torture by the police which was later corroborated in medical board report. The Committee, on the statement of his mother, directed thepolice authorities that the case should be registered against the concerned persons and compliance report be sent to it at the earliest. The Superintendent of Police Lahore apprised the committee aboutanother incident in which a lady from district Kasur was made todisembark from a bus in Lahore by police personnel, who was later gang raped. The Committee directed the concerned police officer to makeall efforts to trace the lady who was gang raped and produce her in its next meeting.
The committee also discussed the Arbitration (International Investment Disputes) Ordinance, 2007 (Ordinance No.XXXVIII of 2007). The Secretary Investment Board Ahmed Jawad and Chairman SECPRazi ur Rehman briefed the committee on the bill.
The members of the committee were of the view that they needmore time to consider the bill thoroughly. The bill was deferred for the next meeting scheduled to be held on September 18.
