NPSC holds meeting

ISLAMABAD—The National Public Safety Commission (NPSC) held its 16th meeting on 4th September 2007 at the National Police Bureau, Ministry of Interior, Islamabad under the chairmanship of Mr. Aftab Ahmad Khan Sherpao, Federal Minister for Interior/Chairperson of NPSC. The NPSC members who attended the meeting included Lt. Gen. (Retd) Moin-ud-Din Haider, Lt. Col. (Retd) Ghulam Rasul Sahi, Mrs. Shabina Talaat, Mr. Sher Akbar Khan, Syed Nayyar Hussain Bokhari, Mr. Sikandar Hayat Jamali and Mr.Muhammad Abbas Khan. Dr. Muhammad Shoaib Suddle, Secretary National Public Safety Commission, was also present at the occasion.
Syed Kamal Shah, Secretary Interior, who attended the meeting on special invitation, briefed the Commission on the prevailing internal security threats, in particular on Lal Masjid/Jamia Hafsa operation, situation in FATA, Talabanisation of parts of NWFP and the challenges of militancy, extremism and Al-Qaida sponsored terrorism.
The Minister for Interior also gave his perspective on the exceptional law and order scenario that exists in the country at the moment. The Commission thanked the Minister for Interior and the Secretary Interior for a very exhaustive and insightful briefing. The Commission also gave a number of useful proposals against the menace of on-going terrorism.
The Commission discussed a number of measures pertaining to its empowerment especially in relation to handling of public complaints against the police, making police accountability more effective and building capacity of police to render it more efficient and responsive.
