Harvard team offers to set-up school of nursing

ISLAMABAD—The Chairman Senate, Mr. Mohammedmian Soomro has stated here
Tuesday that this was the age of globalization and the people prefer to
get treatment of international standards from hospitals, where it is
available at competitive rates.
He made these observations while talking to a delegation of Harvard
Medical International headed by Mrs. Lori Mathew, which called on him
here. Mr. Salman Shah, Advisor to Prime Minister on Finance and Lt. Gen.
(R) Jehandad Khan, Chief of Al-Shifa Trust Eye Hospitals were also
present during the meeting.
Mr. Soomro said that it was a matter of satisfaction that cost effective
and quality treatment was available in Pakistan, both in the private as
well as in the public sector hospitals. He said that service to humanity
was the highest form or worship.
The Senate Chairman, appreciating the offer made by Harvard Medical
International to establish a Medical Institute and the School of Nursing
in Pakistan, underlined the need for greater collaboration between the
social welfare organizations the world over. He noted with satisfaction
that only Rs. 3000-5000 were being charged for cataract operation at Al-Shifa
Trust Eye Hospitals whereas almost $ 15000 were being charged for a
similar operation in any of public sector hospital in London.
The Chairman said that the affluent sections of the society have a
responsibility to look after their less fortunate brethren and
disadvantaged groups. They must come forward to supplement the
Government’s efforts for expanding health and education facilities. In
this connection, he referred to a number of renowned social and
philanthropic organizations being run successfully by private
individuals. He said that the Government would promote such
organizations and extend full patronage to such social welfare
organizations. He was of the view that there existed vast potential for
such collaboration.
The Leader of the Harvard Medical International delegation informed the
Senate Chairman that his team was keen to establish a Medical Institute
and a School of Nursing in Pakistan, which could cater to the needs of
the people with a view to bring about a qualitative improvement in the
life of the people of Pakistan. He also apprised the Chairman of the
scope of activities of the organization and the impact it has on
improving the over all health facilities benefiting the people. Lt. Gen.
(R) Jehandad Khan stated that Al-Shifa Trust has established a model
institute, where training of international standard is being imparted to
the Eye Surgeons from nine countries and that quality treatment of
various eye diseases was also being provided to the patients at nominal
cost. |
