Chinese peace-keepers fly to Lebanon
CHENGDU—A 170-member Chinese
peace-keeping team left Chengdu, the capital of south China’s Sichuan
Province, on Monday, aboard a chartered plane to Lebanon.
They are the first batch of the third Chinese peace-keeping detachment
posted to Lebanon. The remaining 165 soldiers and officers will leave
China on Sept. 13.
The third detachment to Lebanon is composed of an engineering battalion,
which will be responsible for clearing mines, building infrastructure
and carrying out other humanitarian tasks, and a medical team.
In March 2006, China dispatched its first detachment of peace-keepers to
Lebanon and the second detachment was posted in January of this year.
