Judiciary won’t allow violation of verdicts: CJ

ISLAMABAD—Public confidence in the courts has been restored and every decision of the courts enjoys the support of the people of Pakistan, said Chief Justice of Pakistan Iftikhar Muhammad Chaudhry on Saturday.
He was addressing delegations of Free legal Aid Committee,Pakistan Bar Council and Lahore High Court Bar, Multan Bench and Bahawalpur Bench. He said no one will be able to violate the courts’ verdicts due to public confidence and trust.
Decisions given by the superior courts are public property and the public will ensure that these decisions are not violated and implemented in true spirit, he added. While responding to a query regarding shortage of judges in courts, Chief Justice of Pakistan said that all the appointments to the higher judiciary should be made on merit in a transparent manner.
He added that there is no delay on part of Supreme Court, adding that he would ask the government to take necessary action in this regard and appoint judges as soon as possible. The Chief Justice said that a case of appointment of judges in the Sindh Court had come to Supreme Court and it has been processed and soon the judges would be appointed.
Elaborating the suo motu actions on public interest cases, he said that High Court and District and Session Courts will be involved to provide relief to the common man. “But there are some legal issues which are being looked into to improve the system” he added.
The Chief Justice said that society showed trust and faith in the lawyer’s movement and even people from for flung areas participated in it. He said that now lawyers have to fulfill the responsibilityand take further the trust posed in them by the people.
“The responsibility upon you has doubled due to the trust and confidence bestowed upon you by the society and you have to ensure that services provided by you are effective and efficient”, he added while referring to the quick disposal of the cases in the lower courts. He said disposal of cases is an issue which affects the common man and “we need to look into it very seriously.”
Iftikhar Chaudhry said Bar and Bench are like a family and they should work together to provide services to the people.
Earlier the Presidents of the Free Legal Aid Committee, Pakistan Bar Council and Lahore High Court Bar, Multan Bench and Bahawalpur Bench expressed their confidence in the Chief Justice.
They appreciated the role of the civil society in the lawyer’s movement and assured the Chief Justice that they would fully participate in his mission to provide justice to the poor people and common man of Pakistan.
