Staff Report
ISLAMABAD—The chairman NDMA, (National Disaster Management Authority)
Lt.Gen (Retd) Farooq Ahmad Khan has announced that World Bank and Asian
Development Bank have prepared a comprehensive report about flood
affected areas of Pakistan.
Addressing a press conference at the PM Secretariat on Friday, he said
that total losses would be estimated, while it has been estimated that
420 persons died, 109 were missing, 6450 villages were destroyed, 75,000
homes suffered, while 45% persons were displaced as homeless.
He refuted that there was any danger of spread of infectious diseases
due to the recent floods and said that all roads and highways were
intact, assuring that illegally operating NGOs would not be provided any
relevant details, while action would be taken against them by relevant
authorities.
He disclosed that only 3 NGOs of UN and International level were working
in Sindh, while the others had been barred form operations because of
their failure to come up to the standards.
He said that there was no information available about recent donations
to the presidential funds, and claimed that the proposed plan of Mirani
Dam was free of any errors. The Dam was built to sustain a water storage
capacity of 500,000 cusecs, but this time it was forced to contain
800,000 cusecs, after a record 172 mm rain after 90 years.
He informed that medical camps were established in 15 districts, in
which 2,71,000 patients were checked, and only 72 villages have been
re-supplied with electricity.
He also assured that no further destructive rains as such are expected
until further one week, and also announced the formation of a
communication network for informing about climatic conditions. |
