High crime rate observed during 2006

RAWALPINDI—Street crimes, notably robberies, vehicle theft, kidnapping for ransom, attempt of murder and murder in Rawalpindi district increased sharply during last 11 months and three weeks of this year.
A review of the crime situation in the period revealed that 12,994 cases of crimes were registered with the police compared to 11,687 last year in Rawalpindi district. According to the statistics, 249 murders, 351 attempts to murder, 831 hurt cases and 41 cases of clashes were registered during last 11 months and three week of this year.
The incidents of 292 kidnapping/abduction including children and women, 23 rapes and 6 one gang-rape were recorded by the police in the last 11 months and three weeks in 2006.
Round about 78 dacoities, 494 theft cases, 223 burglary, 550 masked robbery cases, 54 cattle theft cases and 607 cases of others theft were reported to the Police in 2006. A sharp rise in vehicle theft was also observed with 611 vehicles and 506 motorbikes taken away. During the same period in 2006, 132 fatal and 241 non- fatal accidents were reported to the police in Pindi district. More than 1815 cases of arm seizure and 2190 cases of narcotics seizure were reported to the Police during 2006.
Increasing number of land dispute cases was reported in jurisdictions of Civil Line and Airport police Stations and sharp rise in theft cases were observed in precincts of Banni and Pirwadhai Police Stations.
Likewise, vehicles theft cases were on rise in vicinity of Cannt and New Town Police Station while increasing number of motorcycle theft cases were reported in RA Bazar and Waris Khan Police stations. Similarly, large number of narcotics cases was registered in precincts of Sadiqabad, Westridge, Central Saddar, Taxila and Gujar Khan Police stations. A large number of police officials have been dismissed and suspended from service for their direct involvement in different offences during 2006.—Online
