Army wins National Volleyball Championship 11th time

ISLAMABAD—Pakistan Army battered Police in the final of 42nd National Volleyball Championship here at Liaquat Gymnasium on Saturday to clinch the title for 11th time.
Showing their overall superiority in the game, the Soldiers romped home to an easy 3-0 victory over the defending champions. Earlier, Wapda secured an equally comfortable win over PAF by thrashing them in straight sets to capture third position on points table.
Contrary to the expectations of spectators to watch a sizzling clash of the titans, the cops failed to play champion-level game and surrendered their title to the soldiers by losing 25-18, 25-19, 25-13.
Zaheer Abbas, Sana Ullah, Imran Ali and Ishfaq Hussain were prominent among those who displayed a great skill of spiking, smashing and blocking before picking the championship trophy for Pak Army.
Earlier, Wapda handed 3-0(25-22, 27-25, 25-21) defeat to PAF and stood third in the 42nd National Volleyball Championship. Ali Abbas, Jawad and Farooq played well for Wapda. Federal Minister for Sports Mian Shamim Haider gave away the trophy and prizes to the players.
Inspector General Police Islamabad Chaudhary Iftekhar, Director General Privatisation Javed Ali Khan, DG Pakistan Sports Board Lt Col Salahuddin, Associate Secretary Pakistan Olympic Association Lt Col Yahya and Secretary General Pakistan Volleyball Federation Major Muhammad Afzal were also present on the occasion.
Sajid Nawaz (Police) was declared Best Blocker of the tournament whereas Sana Ullah (Army) won Best Spiker and Zaman Butt got Best Setter prize. Kashif Mansoor landed the Most Valuable Player of the tournament award.—Agencies
