NATO, Afghan troops responsible for peace: Kasuri
ISLAMABAD—Foreign Minister Khurshid Mehmood Kasuri has categorically
stated that Pakistan is not responsible for the current deteriorating
situation in Afghanistan.
Talking to special envoy of European Union, Francess Vengal who called
on him here at the Foreign Office on Tuesday, the foreign minister said
that maintaining law and order in Afghanistan was responsibility of
Afghan Army and NATO forces.
According to the Foreign Office, the overall security situation in the
region, restoring peace in Afghanistan, Pak-Afghan borders issues and
Pakistan’s strategy to improve situation in the tribal areas were also
discussed in the meeting.
Foreign Minister during the meeting also apprised EU envoy about the
steps taken by Pakistan to restore peace in the region and said that it
is unfortunate that some elements are blaming Pakistan for the
deteriorating situation in Afghanistan. Pakistan, in fact is playing a
vital role for restoration of peace and tranquility in Afghanistan, he
added. Khurshid Kasuri said that President Musharraf has given a number
of suggestions for the restoration of peace on permanent basis in
Afghanistan, as only military operation is not the solution of the
problem. The international community should also play its due role for
resolution of political, economic and cultural problems of Afghan
people, he added.
The EU envoy, hailed the Pakistan steps taken for restoration of peace
in Afghanistan; however, he expressed concern over the resurgence of the
Taliban and worsening situation.
Foreign Minister Khurshid M. Kasuri left here on Tuesday for Tehran on a
two-day official visit at the invitation of his Iranian counterpart
Foreign Minister Manocher Mottaki. The Foreign minister besides
bilateral issues will also discuss ways and means for further
strengthening cooperation in various fields, Iran-Pakistan-India Gas
Pipeline, regional developments including Afghanistan, Iraq, Lebanon and
Middle East peace process.
Kasuri is expected to meet other important Iranian leaders, including
parliamentarians, Civil Society and business representatives. Pakistan
has very close and cordial relations with Iran and enjoy deep, historic,
political and religious ties and the visit of Foreign Minister Kauri to
Iran will further strengthen these relations.
Foreign Minister Khurshid Mehmood Kasuri has reached Tehran on official
visit where he will discuss bilateral, regional and international issues
with the high officials of the Iranian government.
According to the foreign office resources, Minister will meet his
Iranian counterpart Manocher Mutaqi and will discuss about the IPI gas
pipeline project and reconciliation of the gas tariff, besides reviewing
the trade, investment, education and health relations between the both
countries as well.
He is also expected to meet Iranian President Mehmood Ahmdi Nejad during
