60 couples tie nuptial knot

KARACHI—As many as 60 couples tied the nuptial knot here at a mass wedding ceremony held at Katchi Memon Community Centre, Bahadarabad on Sunday. The arrangements for the mass wedding were made by Women Development Organisation and Falah Welfare Trust jointly. The couples, who were joined in matrimony, were hailed from the remote adjoining areas of the city, 48 of them were from Rehri Goth, Ibrahim Haideri, 10 from Memon Goth and two from Othal of Balochistan. The newly wed-couples were given copies of Holy Quran, suitcases, ladies suit with Dopatas, clothes, shoes, bed sheets with blankets, beds, decoration pieces, kitchen articles, hot pots, water cooler and other things as dowry. Addressing the gathering, Secretary Falah Welfare Trust said that to hold the mass wedding in the mega city of Karachi was aimed at to aware the people of the city from sufferings of the women of rural areas due to poverty, illiteracy and odious customs so that the philanthropists as well as the government and non-government organisation could come forward and join the efforts to eliminate poverty and improve the condition of women of rural areas. Chairperson Women Development Foundation Sabiha Shahid said that the women of rural areas were suffering from poverty, illiteracy and odious customs. Due to which the parents could not marry their daughters. He thanked the philanthropists and well-off people who came forward on her call and contributed in the virtuous work. —Agencies
