Strict control regime in place against proliferation: Kasuri

ISLAMABAD—Ambassador Annalisa Giannella, Personal Representative to the EU High Representative, Javier Solana on WMD Non- proliferation called on Foreign Minister Khurshid M. Kasuri on Tuesday. The Ambassador is leading an EU delegation to the first Pakistan-EU Workshop on Export Controls. Pakistan’s inter-departmental team is being led by Additional Secretary (UN&EC), Tariq Osman Hyder in the Ministry of Foreign Affairs.
Foreign Minister Khurshid Mehmood Kasuri reiterated Pakistan’s commitment to WMD non-proliferation and highlighted that as the proceedings of the Workshop had demonstrated, Pakistan had put in place a multi-layered legislative and administrative export control regime consistent with international standards.
This would be consistently updated taking into account best practices of the developed countries, including of the European Union and all its members. The Foreign Minister stressed that the Workshop was being held as part of Pakistan’s bilateral and multi-lateral cooperation in the area of global WMD non-proliferation in which Pakistan was a partner.
The foreign Minister stated that this process of interaction should facilitate cooperation with the EU in dual use technology, including to meet Pakistan’s nuclear power generation needs under safeguards. Ambassador Giannella appreciated the proceedings of the Export Controls Workshop which would last for two days and which would cover exploration of further avenues of cooperation between Pakistan and the European Union.
The Workshop was a manifestation of the European Union desire to engage in a forward looking manner with Pakistan in this important field.
European Union has expressed satisfactions over the initiatives taken by Pakistan to control nuclear proliferation. Pakistan and European Union have decided to continue dialogues to share information pertaining to destructive weapons and control of nuclear proliferation.
This was decided in a meeting between Additional Secretary in Foreign Office Tariq Usmani and European Union delegation led by Ana Lisa, Special Representative of Haways Solana Leader European Union Foreign Affairs here in Foreign Office on Tuesday.
During the talks, matters concerning to control of nuclear proliferations and spreading of devastating weapons were discussed. Tariq Usmani told the delegation that our control and command system to control nuclear proliferation is very effective and strong while Government would soon stronger the law of nuclear non-proliferation.
The EU delegation expressed satisfaction over the steps taken by Government of Pakistan to control nuclear proliferation. Ana Lisa said that European Union would continue its cooperation with Pakistan in future in this respect.
