Int’l workshop on Highway engineering on 16th

ISLAMABAD—National University of Sciences and Technology (NUST) in collaboration with National Highway Authority (NHA) and HigherEducation Commission (HEC) will hold a 3-day International Workshop on “Highway Engineering” at NHA Auditorium here on December 16.
The workshop will focus will on the physical, technical and capacitydeficiencies of existing highway infrastructure in the country. It will help to transfer state-of-the-art knowledge as well as techniques to highway managers, consultants, contractors and academia.
The Workshop will cover all important aspects related to highway asset management, rehabilitation and safety.
The salient themes of the workshop are; Transportation Asset Management and Preservation Practices at Network and Project Level; Strategy Optimization and the Selection of the Optimum Time, Space and Method for Pavement Preservation; Asphalt Pavement Rehabilitation Options and Selection Criteria and Road Safety Issues and Measures to Minimize Accidents. An efficient highway system is a vital element for the socio-economic development of the country.
The effects of globalization and economic growth in Pakistan, demand greater reliance on efficient movement of goods within the country, furthermore, Pakistan is also evolving as a geo-strategic trading corridor for the neighboring countries. In this scenario, importance of highway sector is paramount, as it carries more than 90 per cent of freight movement.
A cursory overview of the highway sector identifies deficient infrastructure, overloading of trucks, and non-engineering construction andmanagement practices as cause for premature damage to the roads, increase in fuel consumption, and safety hazard.
