ISLAMABAD—National University of Sciences and Technology (NUST) in
collaboration with National Highway Authority (NHA) and HigherEducation
Commission (HEC) will hold a 3-day International Workshop on “Highway
Engineering” at NHA Auditorium here on December 16.
The workshop will focus will on the physical, technical and
capacitydeficiencies of existing highway infrastructure in the country.
It will help to transfer state-of-the-art knowledge as well as
techniques to highway managers, consultants, contractors and academia.
The Workshop will cover all important aspects related to highway asset
management, rehabilitation and safety.
The salient themes of the workshop are; Transportation Asset Management
and Preservation Practices at Network and Project Level; Strategy
Optimization and the Selection of the Optimum Time, Space and Method for
Pavement Preservation; Asphalt Pavement Rehabilitation Options and
Selection Criteria and Road Safety Issues and Measures to Minimize
Accidents. An efficient highway system is a vital element for the
socio-economic development of the country.
The effects of globalization and economic growth in Pakistan, demand
greater reliance on efficient movement of goods within the country,
furthermore, Pakistan is also evolving as a geo-strategic trading
corridor for the neighboring countries. In this scenario, importance of
highway sector is paramount, as it carries more than 90 per cent of
freight movement.
A cursory overview of the highway sector identifies deficient
infrastructure, overloading of trucks, and non-engineering construction
andmanagement practices as cause for premature damage to the roads,
increase in fuel consumption, and safety hazard. |
