Several Capital roads being renamed

ISLAMABAD—The Capital Development Authority (CDA) has approved renaming of 29 roads, underpasses and crossings after freedom fighters, poets and other heroes of Pakistan’s history in Islamabad.
Official sources said Friday the CDA board during its meeting approved a summary containing new names of various roads. The summary would nowbe sent to Prime Minister Shaukat Aziz to seek his final approval. The new names represent the four provinces and the federal capital, aCDA official said.
However, some of the names might not be so common while heroes ofMuslim history and leading sports personalities have been ignored. However, the list contains the name of Tipu Sultan.
The meeting while renaming the roads and intersections followed the guideline that no institution, road, street, etc. should be named after agovernment servant or public representative while he is alive.
The CDA board decided that art and cultural institutions could be namedafter deceased artists of national fame and the same principle could be followed in case of other main buildings.
The intersection of Jinnah Avenue with Constitution Avenue has beengiven the name of Pakistan Square, the intersection of Garden Road with Jinnah Avenue - commonly known as China Chowk - is now Bolan Chowk. Other main intersections being renamed include intersection of 7thAvenue with Jinnah Avenue (Khyber Chowk), intersection of Faisal Avenuewith Jinnah Avenue (Rachna Chowk) and intersection of 9th Avenue with Jinnah Avenue (Mehran Chowk).
The meeting also approved that Service Road (East), F-8, be named after Ismail Zabih, a freedom fighter who also proposed the name of Islamabad.
Service Road (North), F-8, gets the title of Perveen Shakir Road, thedouble road leading to National Defence College, E-8, will be named after Lalak Jan Shaheed, the recipient of Nishan-e Haider.
