Kasuri leaves for Kabul today
ISLAMABAD—Foreign Minister Khurshid Mehmood Kasuri will embark on a
three day visit to Afghanistan from today (Thursday).
Kasuri will visit Afghanistan from December 7 to 9 to give final shape
to the proposed peace Jirga (convention) of tribal elders from both
sides of the border, aimed at finding a viable solution to militancy in
the region, fore, according to Ministry of Foreign Affairs.
Kasuri will discuss with his Afghan counterpart measures to strengthen
bilateral ties and apprise him of Pakistan’s strategy in bringing peace
to the tribal areas. He will also meet Afghan President Hamid Karzai.
Sources also told that that he would stress on the Afghan government to
sign a peace agreement with Taliban as Pakistan had done in North
Waziristan with tribal elders.
Kasuri would also follow up on what transpired during the discussion
between Musharraf and Afghan President Hamid Karzai during a tripartite
meeting hosted by US President George W Bush at the White House in
September, sources told.
According to the proposed plan Pakistan Tribal elders will be invited in
Kabul while Afghan Tribal elders will be invited in Pakistan. Both
President Musharraf and Hamid Karzai will address the Jirgas. It is also
worth mentioning that Afghan Government wanted participation of
International observer on occasion of Jirga.—Online
