MMA in a fix
over resignations
By Asim Hussain
ISLAMABAD—Serious differences developed in Muttahida Majlis-e-Amal
during its meeting of Supreme Council and Parliamentary Party when Qazi
Hussain Ahmed was in favor of tendering resignations from the parliament
while Fazlur Rehman and other groups were against the decision. The Fazl
and party favored more discussions over the matter and stick to their
stance of not tendering resignations from the membership of Senate and
National Assembly.
The meeting was presided over by Qazi Hussain Ahmed and attended by
Maulana Fazlur Rehman, Abdul Ghafoor Haidri, Hafiz Hussain Ahmed, Liaqat
Baloch, Sajid Mir, Abdul Rahim Naqshbandi, Abul Khair Zubair, Kamran
Murtaza, Qari Gul Rehman and others.
Maulana Fazlur Rehman was of the view that the issue should be raised
from the Assembly platform and government should be given tough time
over the matter of Women Protection Bill. The other parties also raised
their reservations. During the meeting situation got bit tense as both
groups leveled serious allegations against each other, however in order
to reach consensus over the resignation matter party leaders adjourned
the meeting till 11:00 am today (Thursday).
Central Majlis-e-Shoora of Jamiat-Ulema-e-Islam (F) has rejected the
decision to cancel the membership of Hafiz Hussain Ahmed and Maulana
Noor Muhammad and exclude them from the party. According to the sources,
the issue of resignations of Hafiz Hussain Ahmed and Maulana Noor
Muhammad was discussed where Dr Ismail Buledi, Dr Aziz Ullah, Senator Dr
Khalid Mehmood Soomro, Maulana Abdul Ghafoor Haideri and Qari Abdul
Karim Abid suggested that both leaders should either be excluded from
party or they should be barred to contest any election for ten years.
