KANUPP provides electricity to KESC
KARACHI—Karachi Nuclear Power Plant (KANUPP) was brought back in
operation Saturday night when it started providing 50 MWe electricity to
Karachi Electric Supply Corporation (KESC).
According to the General Manager Karachi Nuclear Power Complex (KNPC),
Waqar Murtaza Butt told reporters that KANUPP was shut down on December
12, last year for its Re-Licensing Outage (RLO). He said that by Sunday
evening, KANUPP was providing around 50 MWe electricity to KESC,
according to a statement here. He hoped this would help in meeting
electricity shortfall in the metropolitan city. Waqar said in the wake
of current improvements and safety upgrades, KANUPP is expected to
continue operating safely and efficiently for 10 to 15 years beyond its
designated life in line with current international standards, after
relicensing by Pakistan Nuclear Regulatory Authority (PNRA). He said
that safety record of KANUPP during more than three decades operation
remained excellent as was endorsed by several review missions like
IAEA-OSART in 1985 and 1989, IAEA-ASSET in 1989, WANO Peer review in
1994, 1996 and 2000.—Agencies |
