CJ presents
annual report on SCP, L&JC to President

ISLAMABAD—Chief Justice of Supreme Court, Justice Iftikhar Muhammad
Chaudhry presented annual reports on law and justice commission here at
the presidential camp office here on Saturday.
The report comprising three books namely Report of Supreme Court
ofPakistan (Golden Jubilee Edition) for the year 2005-06, annual report
of Law and Justice Commission of Pakistan and a book on National
Judicial Conference.
The chief justice briefed the president on working of the apex Courtand
said that a number of steps have been taken to dispose of cases
expeditiously. He apprised the president about functions of special
benches constituted at Brach Registries of the Supreme Court, especially
atBranch Registry, Lahore.
He said that about 70 percent pending cases were decided by June
30,2006. He said that the total number of pending cases on July 1, 2005
was 25,808 and another 12,331 cases were filed during last year ending
on June 30, 2006, raising the number of pending cases to 38,139 of which
atotal number of 23,353 cases were decided.
Iftikhar Chaudhry said that ever since assuming the charge of chief
justice, it has been his endeavor to address of backlog that has
accumulated over the past some time, to provide inexpensive and speedy
justice to the aggrieved persons at their doorsteps. He informed the
President about the shortage of office accommodation for the judges
chambers and staff.
President Musharraf said he believed in the independent and
strongjudiciary, which strengthens the democratic institutions, brings
about goodgovernance and stability in the country. He assured the chief
justice that the concerned quarters would be directed to provide all out
supportand do the needful to strengthen the apex Court to improve and
facilitate its working. He said there would no problem of funds and the
government would furnish necessary funds to construct the additional
blocks and provide a congenial working environment for the functioning
of the apex Court.
The chief justice informed that the report has already been posted at
the Supreme Court website, which could be viewed at
www.supremecourt.gov.pk. |
