Workshop held to get stakeholders’ feedback on NDMF

ISLAMABAD—A national consultation workshop was held here to inform
stakeholders about the National Disaster Management Framework (NDMF) and
get their feedback for incorporating changes into the framework.
Representatives of Federal Ministries and Provincial Governments,
Donors, UN Agencies and NGOs attended the workshop, which was aimed at
generating support from stakeholders for the implementation of National
Disaster Management Framework. The other objective of the workshop was
to raise awareness of stakeholders about National Disaster Management
Commission (NDMC) and National Disaster Management Authority (NDMA)
formation and about the passing of National Disaster Management
Ordinance (NDMO).
Addressing the workshop, Chairman, Prime Minister’s Inspection
Commission, Major General Farooq Khan said a National Disaster
Management Authority (NDMA) is being established to ensure policy
formation and information sharing. This would also serve as a
coordinating body for the implementation of cross-sectoral disaster risk
management programmes in response to the high priority by government
officials, donors, non-governmental agencies and other key stakeholders,
he added.
The Framework has been developed in the context of recent priorities of
the government of Pakistan regarding enhancingdisaster risk reduction
capacities by setting up institutional arrangements and policies. It
provides guidelines for the work of multiple stakeholders over the next
five years.
As part of the NDM Framework, nine priority areas were identified for
risk reduction capacity building at the National, Provincial and
District Levels for the next five years.
The nine priority areas include national hazard and vulnerability
assessment, multi-hazard early warning system, institutional and legal
arrangements for risk reduction and response, promoting disaster risk
reduction and preparedness planning, community and local level risk
reduction programming, training, education and awareness raising,
mainstreaming disaster risk reduction into development, capacity
development for emergency response and capacity development for post
disaster recovery. |
