NDMA to be setup disaster management

ISLAMABAD—A National Disaster Management Authority (NDMA) is being established soon to ensure policy formation, information sharing and to serve as a coordinating body for the implementation of cross-sectoral disaster risk management programmes.
This was stated by Major General Farooq Khan Chairman, Prime Minister’s Inspection Commission in his remarks during a “National Consultation Workshop” for the orientation of government agencies, donors and UN Agencies about the National Disaster Management Framework (NDMF) here on Monday.
The workshop was attended by representatives of Federal Ministries, Provincial Government, and Donors, UN Agencies and NGOs. The Framework has been developed in the context of recent priorities of the Government of Pakistan regarding enhancing disaster risk reduction capacities by setting up institutional arrangements and policies.It provides guidelines for the work of multiple stakeholders over the next five years.
The main objective of the National Consultation Workshop were to inform stakeholders about the National Disaster Management Framework (NDMF) and get their feedback for incorporating changes into the Framework; to raise awareness of stakeholders about National Disaster Management Commission (NDMC) and National Disaster Management Authority (NDMA) formation and about the passing of National Disaster Management Ordinance (NDMO) and to generate support from stakeholders for the implementation of National Framework.
During the workshop priority areas were identified for risk reduction capacity building at the National, Provincial and District levels for the next five years. These priority areas include National hazard and vulnerability assessment; Multi-hazard early warning system ; Institutional and legal arrangements for risk reduction and response; promoting disaster risk reduction and preparedness planning ; community and local level risk reduction programming ; training, education and awareness raising; mainstreaming disaster risk reduction into development; capacity development for emergency response and capacity development for post disaster recovery.
The Chairman PM’s Inspection Commission further said the feedback received in the form of comments and suggestions from the workshop would be incorporated in the revised draft—- of the NAtional Disaster Manageemnt Framework. This would be presented to the National Disaster Management Commission for its approval and implementation once the commission is established soon with the issuance of an Ordinance .
