Bollywood doesn’t give me roles I like: Nandita Das
From Noreen Aslam

BOMBAY—Ask talented actress Nandita Das whether she avoids Bollywood and she replies, “I don’t see regional films as any less than Bollywood films. I have done almost 28 films and they have been memorable experiences. I’d be more than happy to do films of different genres. Yes, I would love to do Bollywood films since the language is easy, but my commercial value is not so high, and I don’t get roles that I like. I live in Delhi and people are not aware about me. It’s like ‘out of sight out of mind’.”
Speaking about her role in Chitra Palekar’s Maati Maay, Nandita says, “It was challenging because the story was intense and powerful. Most of the roles I have performed are real. Here, I play a woman who has a lot of dignity and due to social pressure, she crumbles, and it destroys her confidence. It was a reverse journey for me.” Maati Maay is Nandita’s first appearance in a Marathi film. “Initially, I was sceptical about dubbing in Marathi.
