IAEA approves safeguards for Chashma plant

ISLAMABAD—35 member Board of Governors of the International Atomic Energy Agency IAEA has unanimously approved of the implementation of the Safeguard Agreement between IAEA and Pakistan regarding the Chashma Nuclear Power Plant Unit II.
In a statement issued by the foreign office on Friday it was observed that Chashma Nuclear Power Plant Unit I agreement will also be reached soon. It was said that the agreement is the success of Pakistan and in this manner Pakistan, honouring of non-proliferation has been recognised.
Chashma Unit II is part of the Pakistan energy security plan through which the power output will be taken to 8800 megawatts. The present output is 425 megawatts. This is for the purpose of meeting the ever growing energy needs. The Unit II is being build with the cooperation of China. Pakistan is amongst the three non NPT members that has successfully completed the safeguard agreement.
Pakistan has already placed under the IAEA’s safeguards two research reactors and two nuclear power plants. Pakistan has been fulfilling its obligations in respect of these agreements and looks forward to continue cooperation with the agency within the framework of the applicable safeguards agreements in future as well.—Agencies
