Sadia
declared best athlete as UoP win overall trophy in Girls events
PESHAWAR—Sadia Khalid of the University of Peshawar (UoP) declared best
athlete for the Year 2006-07 while her institution UoP took overall
trophy in the 3rd HEC NWFP Universities Sports Gals which concluded here
at Home Economic College for Women ground here on Monday.
Begum Corps Commander Lt. Gen. Mohammad Hamid Khan was the chief guest
on the occasion.
Vice-Chancellor UoP, Prof. Dr. Haroon Rashid, Chairman Organizing
Committee Iftikhar Hussain Khan, Organizing Secretary, Principals,
college student and players were also present. Speaking on this
occasion, Begum Lt. Gen. Mohammad Hamid Khan, said holding such big
events under the patronage of the HEC is no doubt, a unique achievement.
The role of the HEC in this regard has always been positive and
encouraging.
In view of the significance of sports and games, the idea of holding
such event, is very positive step, she added. Uplifting of sports has
always been a dire need of the country, she added. Such rallies will
help in brining the desired results, she said. Sports play an important
part of culture in any healthy society as it is an acceptable outlet of
energy, which develops physical fitness, skills and potential for
building character in youth and also promotes the qualities of teams
spirit, leadership and self-control, she remarked. The meritorious
services rendered by the UoP in the field of HEC are well recognized on
national level as well as on international level.
The efforts and zeal of HEC under the able leadership of Prof.
Atta-ur-Rehman in this regard is highly laudable and praise worthy, she
said. She congratulated Prof. Dr. Haroon Rashid, VC UoP, Chairman Gala
Iftikhar Hussain Khan and Organizing Secretary Bahr-e-Karam on the
successful completion of the Sports Gala.
She also congratulate the participating players and universities for the
high level competitive zeal, they have shown during the Sports Gala. In
his welcome address, CV UoP highlighted various activities the
university is adopted for involving students of all the affiliated
colleges in healthy activities. He said the UoP need improvement of
facilities for most sports. HCE, he said, sanctioned the construction of
squash court but more is still lacking. The UoP require a standards
swimming pool, he added.
He said 450 female players besides 54 technical female officials took
part from nine universities in Athletics, Table Tennis and Badminton.
HEC has promised for more games, next year, which further involve more
female athletes from all the universities across the province.
Later on, Begum Corps Commander gave trophies and medals to the players.
Sadia grabbed golf in Javelin, shot-put and discuss throws while UoP got
the overall trophy by winning TT, Badminton and Athletic trophies. KUST
got runners-up trophy and Agriculture University got third position
trophy. Hazara University got runners-up trophy in TT and Badminton
while KUST got third position in the same events
