Aqeel, Asim to clash in CAS Tennis Open final
PESHAWAR—Aqeel Khan and Asim Shafiq set final showdown after defeating
their respective rivals in the Men singles semi-finals of the Chief of
the Air Staff Khyber Open Tennis played at hard courts of the Civil
Officer Mess on Friday.
The tournament was hit by heavy overnight rain and was shifted to hard
courts where top seed Aqeel Khan outclassed his rivalNomi Qamar by 6-4
and 6-4 and in the second thrilling semi-final Asim eliminated Shehzad
Khan by 7-6 (8-6) and 6-3.
Pakistan’s top Tennis gun Aqeel Khan fully dominated the proceedings and
was in his prime form against Nomi Qamar. He gave no time to Nomi to
settle down in the whole proceedings and thus reached to final. Talking
to reproters Aqeel said: “I’m feeling great form after the recently
Indian Tennis Series. He also lauded Pakistan Tennis Federation for
holding such like series which had given wonderful experience.
International exposure can not only enhance player’s confidence but it
enables the players to learn from each other experience. About the final
he said he would try his level to retain the title after beating Asim
Shafiq. Asim Shafiq faced tough resistance against Shehzad Khan as both
stretched to tie-breaker in the first set 7-6 (8-6). It was an easy
sailing in the second set in which Shafiq marched into victory by
winning the set 6-3. In the Under-17 Yasir Khan and Tanvir Ashiq reached
to Under-17 final after defeating their respective rivals in the
semi-finals. Yasir faced no difficulty in beating Omar Babar by 6-4 and
6-4 but Tanvir Ashiq faced tough resistance against Ahmed Aslam as both
stretched to three sets battle.
Tanvir Ashiq failed to win the first set against Ahmed and were
stretched to tie-breaker in the second but he controlled his nerve in
the third and decisive set to seal the fate of rival at 2-1. The score
was 3-6, 7-6 (6-6) and 6-4. In the Veterans doubles Air Commodore Razi
Ahmed and Inayatullah beat Asif Khan and Rasheed Ahmed by 6-1 and 6-4.
In the Men doubles Inam Gul and Mehmood beat Shahid Afridi and Shehzad
Khan by 6-2 and 7-6 (6-6).—Agencies |
