Life after ‘Sex’: Kristin Davis ‘Decks the Halls’
From Jenny Peters

Los Angeles—At the gala family premiere of “Deck the Halls” on Sunday evening at Grauman’s Chinese Theatre in Hollywood, star Kristin Davis was all smiles. Happy to have moved on since her seven-year stint on the landmark television series “Sex and the City,” the pretty brunette had to laugh at where she’s ended up - starring in the new Christmas comedy as Matthew Broderick’s wife. Why is that so funny? Because, of course, her longtime “Sex” co-star Sarah Jessica Parker is married to him, keeping Davis’s career all in the family.
But despite their close friendship, Davis made sure to clear her choice with Parker before she agreed to take on the role. It just seemed like the diplomatic thing to do, Davis recalled at a press conference in Beverly Hills the day before the premiere.
“I did email her, it was via email because I was in L.A. and she was in New York. I just thought that I should check with her, to see if it seemed like a weird thing not,” Davis admitted. “I thought she would be supportive, but I thought that would be the polite thing rather than her hearing about it after the fact, right? So I emailed and I said, ‘I just wanted to ask if you knew about this and how you felt, do you think it would be weird? It’s family comedy, would you come visit us?’ It was an immediate yes, [she wrote back] ‘I think it’s the best idea ever! Please do it, can’t wait to see you.’”
Parker and Broderick joined her at the premiere, along with Danny DeVito, whose demented decorating of his house sparks the broad comedy of “Deck the Halls,” and his wife Rhea Pearlman. Being surrounded by so many funny people is just the place that Kristin Davis likes to find herself; she readily admits that doing family comedy is more up her alley than some other kinds of roles.
“I think that comedy is a strange and hard thing to do, and I like that challenge. I mean, I like drama too, but it’s hard with drama because [for example] the last drama that they sent me was one where I got violently killed halfway through,” she grimaced.
“I was just like, ‘Oh, I just can’t go there.’ It just didn’t excite me. You have to feel it. I wasn’t excited about that. It’s hard to imagine why, right? But comedy is fun. Comedy is about timing and instincts and when you have people like Danny and Matthew that you can play off of there’s nothing better.”
