WP bill to be
passed with some amends: Sher Afgan
ISLAMABAD—Minister for Parliamentary Affairs, Dr. Sher Afgan Niazi
Tuesday said that Women Protection Bill would be passed during the
current session of the National Assembly.
“The bill will be tabled for discussion on Wednesday as it at the top of
the legislative list,” he told newsmen in the Parliament Cafeteria. He
made it clear that there would not be any change in the draft bill
proposed by the Parliament’s Select Committee.
The Minister said the proposed bill is in accordance with the teachings
of Quran and Sunnah and even a single article is not contrary to Islamic
injunctions. About reservations of opposition on the bill, he said the
members of Mutahida Majlis-e-Amal neither attended the proceedings of
the Select Committee nor gave any proposal for ammendment.
Answering a question he said MMA is only political party which has been
threatening to resign from the National Assembly, adding,”If they want
to step down then they should send their resignations directly to the
Speaker of the National Assembly.” Sher Afgan said the Parliament would
complete its term and the arrangements would be made for bye-elections
in case MMA members step down. In reply to another question he dispelled
the impression that Pakistan Muslim League had reached any deal with MMA
for the passage of the bill.
Maulana Fazlur Rehman, Leader of Opposition and Ameer Jamiat Ulema-e-Islam
(JUI-F) has said that only with the incorporation of amendments proposed
by ulema the Women Protection Bill can be accepted.
Addressing a press conference at the Parliament Lodges on Tuesday along
with the Central Leader of JUI Maulana Abdul Ghafoor Haideri and others,
Maulana Fazl said that rulers talk of extremism but are themselves
pushing the nation towards it.
Maulana Fazl said JUI Central Executive Committee’s 2-day meeting took
place at the parliament lodges that will inaugurate the new executive
committee of the party for a period of next three years. He announced
that the party has decided upon celebrating the 150th anniversary of the
War of Independence 1857 to apprise the present and next generations of
the way our forefathers were ‘hanged’. Talking about the meeting he said
party workers have been directed to gear up for the elections 2007 and
to increase mass contacts.
He said JUI has made it clear upon the government that the WPB was
contrary to Quran and Sunnah and is sheer violation of the constitution.
If an effort is made to do away with the Huqooq-ul-Allah than ‘we will
get rid of the government’.
He demanded that for the new parliamentary year a new schedule should be
given. The parliamentary traditions should be respected. He said that
non-popular legislations should not be passed in a hurry. This will push
the country towards chaos.—Agencies |
