delegation arrives today
ISLAMABAD—An 11-member delegation of the Commonwealth Parliamentary
Association (CPA) ‘UK Branch’ headed by Labour MP, Harry Cohen
comprising members of both the House of Lords and House of Commons is
arriving here today (Tuesday) on a six day official visit to Pakistan,
aiming at exploring matters of mutual interest between Pakistan and UK
especially for further strengthening the Parliamentary relations.
It includes Lord Ahmed of Rotherham (Labour), Mr. Ronnie Campbell MP (Labour),
Mr. Mark Harper MP (Conservative) and Ms. Madeleine Moon MP (Labour) and
Sir Robert Smith (Liberal-Democrat).
During its week-long stay in the country, the delegation will hold
meetings with the Foreign Affairs Committee of the Senate; attend a
briefing on primary and secondary education being arranged by the
Ministry of Education. It is likely to call on the Prime Minister, the
Chairman Senate, the Speaker National Assembly and meet civil society
organizations besides visiting the earthquake affected areas of AJK.
The delegation during its interaction with Parliamentary colleagues in
Pakistan is expected share experiences and ideas about the evolution of
party system and trade and investment opportunities in Pakistan for the
UK companies, in addition to discussing the challenges being faced by
the Pakistani Communities in the UK. Issues relating to security are
also likely to be discussed during the visit. The delegation will also
visit Lahore, where it will call on Governor of the Punjab Lt. Gen (R)
Khalid Maqbool, Chief Minister Punjab Ch. Pervez Elahi, visit Badshahi
Mosque, Lahore Museum and Al-Hamra Cultural complex in addition to
meeting Speaker of the Punjab Assembly.
The visit of the delegation, which is taking place at a crucial time, is
likely to give a fresh impetus to strengthening Pak-UK Parliamentary
