Soomro underlines need to address root causes of terrorism

ISLAMABAD—Chairman Senate Mohammedmian Soomro has underlined the need to address the root causes of the terrorism, principally poverty and injustice with a view to eliminating the scourge from our midst.
He was addressing the inaugural session of the 7th Asian Association of Parliaments for Peace (AAPP) held at Tehran.
He said that fight against hunger, poverty an disease constitute major battle to knock down the monster of terrorism which is spreading its tentacles in all directions.
It is imperative, therefore, he added, to strengthen the consultative process and the political will to realize this objective.
He said being home to two third of the world poor, Asia must step up efforts to fight extreme poverty and social discard.
The fight against terrorism, he said, has to include fight against poverty as well as an integral part of the overall strategy.
He informed that Pakistan is committed to the UN Millennium Developments Goals (MDG) which aimed at eradicating poverty from the face of the earth.
He also informed that under the authorization by the Manila Senior Advisory Council, an interim Secretariat of the Asian Anti Poverty Fund has already been set up in the National Assembly of Pakistan.
The Deputy Chairman called for collective endeavour to achieve the laudable objective of poverty eradication.
The consultative process initiated through AAPP is an important tool at our disposal to achieve this objective, he observed. The coming Asiatic age should be characterized not by war or conflict but by cooperation, he concluded.
Pakistan delegation comprised, besides the leader of Pakistan Parliamentary delegation Senator Jan Muhammad Jamali and Senator Muhammad Abbas Komaili.
