Akram wins Garrison golf title

LAHORE—Muhammad Akram (WAPDA) won the Garrison Golf championship with brilliance dominating the final day play over the final 18 holes here on Sunday at Lahore Garrison Golf and Country club.
Akram was just superb in all aspects of this game. His round of 64 turned out to be a course record and became possible through birdies on 1,3,5,6, eagle on 7th and more birdies on 15th and the closing 18th hole end led him to success among countrys top skilful golfers.
Punjab Governor Lt Gen (R) Khalid Maqbool, a golfer himself was the chief guest on the occasion . In attendance were, Lt.Gen. Shafatullah Shah, Corps Commander, Maj. Gen. Ghulam Mustafa Kauser, GOC, senior army officers, sponsors and participating golfers. The three days 54 holes Garrison Open Golf Championship came to a successful conclusion on Sunday at the par-72 Garrison Golf Course.
The final pairing on the last day consisted of Imdad Hussain, M.Shabbir, M. Akram and Matloob Ahmed. All these four were looking pretty good with Imdad Hussain slightly ahead of the others. At the very start Imdad Hussain made two mistakes and thereby lost stokes on the first and the third hole. As against him Akram appeared in full command, starting of with a birdie followed by another one on the third hole and thereby he managed to wipe out the over night deficit. Thereafter, Akram kept his batteries on and did not miss anything, and kept the other contenders at bay. The final issue of the winner was ultimately decided on the last hole when Akram birdied the hole by putting from a distance of 12 feet.
He beat Imdad Hussain by one stroke. Akram’s three days aggregate was 202 as compared to Imdad’s 203. For Imdad this is been a great tournament and he has played solidly, yet victory did not come his way. Apparent was a bit of torment in his eyes, as he thought this was his home course and the putting greens were to his liking.—INP
