Blair to
visit this month
By Our Diplomatic Correspondent
ISLAMABAD—British Prime Minister Tony Blair is to travel to Pakistan
later this month for talks with President Pervez Musharraf, Foreign
Office said on Thursday.
“Blair is expected here later this month and the dates for the summit
meeting will be announced after mutual consultations,” Foreign Office
spokesperson Tasnim Aslam told reporters.
Other officials said the talks were expected to focus on co-operation in
the fight against terrorism, the regional situation including
Afghanistan, the Pakistan-India peace process and bilateral issues.
British forces are in the forefront of the ongoing NATO-led military
campaign to quell the revived Taliban insurgency in Afghanistan’s
southern and eastern provinces that border on Pakistan.
It will be Blair’s third visit to the South Asian Islamic republic of
150 million people, following trips here in October 2001 and January
2002 — both in the wake of the September 11, 2001 attacks on the United
States. |
