Amitabh makes bad look good
Why did you opt for the role of Gabbar?
I always wanted to play Gabbar Singh. In fact I had told this to Ramesh
Sippy as well, but he thought I suited Jai’s role better. Eventually it
went to Amjad Khan and I couldn’t do Gabbar. But I nurtured a wish and I
am happy that at 64, my wish is getting fulfilled.
You have created a positive superstar image. What impact would this
negative image create in the minds of the audiences?
I am just an actor and I try to do my best in any role. I am not what I
portray on reel, in real life. I don’t know why people call me a
superstar, I only feel privileged and thank everyone for the position I
am enjoying today. But I would like to add one thing. If I live up to
the character, it means I am a successful actor. If a villain is known
as the bad man by the audiences in public, it means he has done his job
to perfection
What is your approach towards the role of Gabbar?
Since the set up is contemporary, Gabbar will be a suave and elegant
gangster who knows the mind of terrorists and gives the police a run. It
is Ramu’s interpretation of Gabbar, I just followed his instructions and
have approached the role the way he wanted. Amjad was a great friend and
during the shoot of Sholay we chatted a lot, but I cannot compete with
him. He was a brilliant actor. I will try to do justice to Ram Gopal Ke
Sholay and try to bring the level of intensity that Ramu is expecting,
though it’s a difficult task but I will not leave any stone unturned.
Does the remake bring memories of Ramesh Sippy’s Sholay?
Yes it does. We had a good time shooting for the film. I am sure we will
enjoy working on this one as well.
What according to you should a villain make the audience feel?
Terror. He should create fear among the audience.
Your films are being remade. Wouldn’t you go in for a remake?
Remaking is beyond my means. If others are remaking my films I can’t
stop them. Many films are being remade and Don is one of them. I am
happy about it. I met Farhan Akhtar recently in Toronto and he promised
me that he would show me the first copy of the film. He has given it a
classy look.—Agencies |
