Musharraf completes 7 years of rule

ISLAMABAD—President Gen Pervez Musharraf would complete his seven years of rule today (Thursday).
President Musharraf who also enjoys the portfolio of being chief of the army staff took over the reigns of the country on Oct 12, 1999 after overthrowing the government of the then Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif in a military coup.
President Musharraf instead of imposing martial law in the country after taking over first suspended the parliament and ran the country affairs by becoming the Chief Executive, later he became the president and in 2002 a new government was formed through elections.
Mirzaffarullah Khan became the PM in 2002 however he was forced to resign in 2004 and than Chaudhry Shujaat Hussain was made an interim PM for 45 days and in August 2004 Prime Minister Shaukat Aziz became the Prime Minister till date.
President Musharraf during his 7 years rule saw many trials and tribulations but he preferred to remain in uniform and also had to face many challenges as being a front line ally of the US in war against terrorism.—Agencies
