Tahir condemns Afzal Guru’s death sentence
By Ali Imran

ISLAMABAD—Federal Minister for Kashmir Affairs and Northern Areas Maj (Retd) Tahir Iqbal Saturday strongly condemned the death sentence awarded to Afzal Guru, the Kashmiri Muslim sentenced to death by the Indian Supreme Court for allegedly plotting 2001 attack on Indian Parliament.
The Minister said that awarding such extreme punishment in a case where the accused has pleaded not-guilty is a violation of human rights and would hurt the feelings of Kashmiri Muslims on both sides.
He hoped that the clemency appeal by Afzal Guru’s family would be accepted by the Indian President.
He added that Pakistan is closely watching the situation and is expecting that the matter would be resolved and the death sentence of Afzal Guru would be cancelled by the Indian government as both the governments believe in safeguarding human rights.
