Fidayeens storm Indian Army camp

SRINAGAR—Fidayeen freedom fighters stormed a heavily fortified security forces camp in the heart of Srinagar Wednesday morning, causing panic in the city while two members of a family were killed and two others injured allegedly in army firing in southern Anantnag district in the wee hours today.
Panic gripped the heart of the city teeming with thousands of office goers, students and traders when gunfire broke out near Akhara Building, housing the camp of central reserve police force (CRPF) in Budshah Chowk area here at around 11 a.m today.
People and shopkeepers ran for safety, leaving the shops open. It is believed that an unknown number of Fidayeen have managed to sneak inside the camp and firing was on. Troops immediately surrounded the area.
There is no immediate report of any casualty.
Meanwhile, protest demonstrations rocked southern Anantnag town after troops gunned down two members of a family early Wednesday morning.
The troops laid an ambush at Ahlan Gadola in Kokernag area when a family was returning home from their maize fields at around 1.00 am. The army personnel opened fire on them in which two persons were killed and two others injured.
A Defence spokesman confirmed the incident, saying the Army was investigating the matter.
"The formation commander has rushed to the spot. A statement on the incident would be made only after he submits his report," he said.
The deceased have been identified as Mohammad Ashraf Naikoo (18) and his sister Misra (25), children of Hashim Ali Naikoo, while the injured have been identified as Lateefa, daughter-in law of Hashim, and his son-in-law Abdul Karim.
The condition of Karim, 60, is stated to be critical.
Meanwhile another report from the area said three freedom fighters were killed in a fierce gun battle with the army near the famous health resort of Pahalgam late last night.—Agencies
