Redefining of provinces under consideration: Sher Afgan

ISLAMABAD—Minister for parliamentary affairs Dr Sher Afgan Niazi has said the proposals on division of Punjab into two parts, up gradation of divisions into provinces and appointment of governor general therein are under active consideration in order to ensure autonomy for the provinces.
He said this while talking to the journalists here Tuesday in parliament house. He held government was considering several options with reference to provincial autonomy.
The concurrent list was to be abolished after ten years of implementation of 1973 constitution but it is still there. Now it should be abolished so that the issue of provincial autonomy could be resolved. It is matter of regret that the provinces have started giving statements against each other. This is a dangerous tendency, he cautioned.
He told that government was reviewing all the bills including the bill presented by Abdul Mujib Pirzada of PPP-P.
Replying to a question on division of Punjab into different parts, he said the proposals to divide Punjab into two parts besides upgrading every division to the status of province and appointment of governor general there are being considered by the government.
He went on to say the government wanted to grant maximum autonomy to the provinces. Government, if need be, will bring amendments in the constitution in this respect. All the political parties will be taken into confidence on this matter, he underlined.—Online
