Zia-Hamed wins Grand Pairs Bridge

KARACHI—Ziaulah Baig and Hamed Mohiuddin steal the show by wrapping-up
the Grand Pairs Tournament Sunday evening at Aslam Bridge Hall here.
Giving excellent treatment with their expert-bidding technique and sound
table play, Zia-Hamed pair earned almost 70 percent score at the all
important third and stage.
That score helped them to cut the distance and they came at the top with
63.75 percent score to win the contest.
Shakeel Chandna-Navaid Anjum missed the target by a whisker as they
scored 62.80 percent in thirty competition sponsored by Data Steel and
Pakistan Bridge University.
On the opening day, the pair of Shakeel Chandna-Navaid Anjum led the
procession, followed by Tariq Rasheed Khan-Sultan Siddiqui, Asghar
Naqvi-Ghaffar Qureshi.
However, after the conclusion of the second segment, Syed Ameer Hasan-Tariq
Zafar took over the leadership, Shakeel Chandna-Navaid, Zia-Hamid,
Khaled-Mubashir, Mohsin-Gulzar Bilal, Afzal Shaikh-Saeed Ansari, Asghar
Naqvi-Ghaffar Qureshi,following the leader very closely.
Khaled Mohiuddin-Mubashir Puri covered up the lost ground at the close.
They scored 61.40 percent for the third position and veteran pair of
Asghar Naqvi-Ghafar Qureshi occupied fourth position giving excellent
treatment to the computerized tricky boards.
At the presentation ceremony se of the tournament Founder President of
the Karachi Bridge Association, Dr. Muhammad Iliyas, Founder lauded the
efforts of Tariq Rasheed Khan in promoting duplicate bridge in Pakistan
and the efforts to establish first institute of teaching and coaching of
the mind sport. |
