Marc Bouwer's Color Explosion Lindsay Sammon
New York—It was a socialite's dream at the Marc Bouwer Spring 2007
collection on Friday, September 8th, so it came as no surprise that the
venue was packed with them, including Ivana Trump and Casey Johnson in
the front row.
The collection, which featured very bold colors - magenta, cyan, apple
red, and swirls of black and white - was chockfull of flashy silk jersey
and silk chiffon gowns that dazzled with jewels and sequins. Animal
print gowns with plunging necks and backs made an appearance, followed
by shiny metallic snake print swimsuits. Sexy cutouts as well as chunky
bangles and brooches topped of the looks, while shoes featured large
stones and glossy adornments. In all its gaudy, over-the-top glory (even
the runway was a piercing yellow) however, the show produced a
collection that Bouwer insisted was about purity.
"The colors are totally pure," said Bouwer. "There's no neon or colors
achieved by mixing other colors. And I really went back to my roots on
this collection, back to the fashion photography and images that I
remember as a child, and which made me want to become a fashion
designer."
Bouwer's strong point as a designer is that he clearly has a knack for
cutting a garment to fit a woman, and his use of color is fun and
fearless. His loud interpretations of purity however, like the magenta
gown with the busy lace overlay, are a little too ostentatious.—Agencies |
