Dr. Qadeer undergoes successful surgery

KARACHI—Renowned nuclear scientist Dr Abdul Qadeer Khan was successfully operated upon on Saturday at Aga Khan University Hospital for prostate cancer, hospital sources and a sister of Dr Khan confirmed.
A team of senior urologists, led by Dr Farhat Abbass removed Dr Khan's prostate gland, which was the main cause of prostate cancer, the sources said. The surgery lasted for three and a half hours.
"Dr Sahib (Khan) has been shifted to the recovery room after a successful radical prostectomy surgery, where his condition is very much stable. However, we will keep him under constant monitoring for next 12 hours till his gut sound gets audible ", a hospital official said and added that Dr Khan would be shifted to his private room later.
According to the sources, the surgery began at 10:30 am, and culminated at 2:00 pm. Dr Khan's wife and his two daughters remained at the hospital during the surgery, the sources maintained. His personal physician Lt General (Rtd) Riaz Ahmed Chowhan .was also present during the surgery, the sources added.
"Yes, by the grace of Allah Almighty, Dr Khan has been operated upon successfully", Mrs Razia Hussein, a younger sister of Dr Khan said.
" We are so happy, and thankful to Almighty Allah that everything went smooth", she added. To a question, she said that Dr Khan planned to stay at her residence located in Mohammed Ali Society for next two weeks, however, she could not say anything for sure in this regard at this stage.
" He (Dr Khan) had stayed at my home for several hours before he was admitted to the hospital. Let us hope, Inshaullah everything will be alright", she maintained.
Hospital sources said that Dr Khan would have stay at the hospital for at least next one to two days for post-operative care, especially secondary bleeding, which might occur after a surgery.
Dr Khan is admitted at room no 130 of the private wing of Aga Khan Hospital, where the entrance of general public, including hospital staff has been banned.
Before surgery, the hospital official said, the Prostate Specific Anti-gene test (PSA), and the Histopathocogy frozen test of Pelvic Node Lymph were re-taken, which proved negative.
He said that Dr Khan would have to use lethedral (pipe) for passing of urine for next 12 days.
Meanwhile, according to a press release issued here, Dr Farhat Aabbas expressed his satisfaction and confirmed the success of the operation. He indicated that thets was a delicate operation and after several hours of efforts, the team was able to perform the surgery successfully without any complications, the press release said.
The operation was likely to control further spread of disease, it said and added that Dr Khan was expected to stay at the hospital for some time for post-operative care.—Online
