Henin-Hardenne, Federer in action today

NEW YORK—Justine Henin-Hardenne faces Lindsay Davenport and Roger Federer takes on Marc Gicquel in U.S. Open tennis today. Also in action are Elena Dementieva, James Blake and Marat Safin.
Serena Williams had been 9-1 lifetime versus Amelie Mauresmo until the two met in the fourth round of the U.S. Open yesterday. Top-seeded Mauresmo advanced to the quarterfinals with a 6-4, 0-6, 6-2 victory over Williams.
Mauresmo appeared to be on the ropes after a sluggish second set, leading 3-2 with Williams on serve. But Williams ran out of steam after losing a 35-stroke exchange that ended the sixth game of the final set. Mauresmo won nine of the last 12 points to earn the right to face 12th seed Dinara Safina in the quarters.
Safina knocked out Virginia Razzano 7-5, 6-0.
The second, third and fourth seeds also reached the quarterfinals.
Number-two Justine Henin-Hardenne knocked off Shahar Peer 6-1, 6-0. Third seed Maria Sharapova and number-four Elena Dementieva also won in straight sets, as did tenth seed Lindsay Davenport. Davenport ousted seventh seed Patty Schnyder 6-4, 6-4.
Sixth seed Svetlana Kuznetsova was beaten by Jelena Jankovic 6-7, 6-3, 6-2.
Henin-Hardenne next faces Davenport, Sharapova will battle Tatiana Golovin and Dementieva will take on Jankovic. Golovin cruised to a straight-sets victory.
Second seed Rafael Nadal has made it into the men's quarterfinals, two months after reaching the Wimbledon finals. The second-seeded Nadal rolled to a 6-1, 7-6, 6-4 win over Jiri Novak.
Ninth seed Andy Roddick beat the man who ended Andre Agassi's career on Sunday. Roddick hammered out a 6-3, 6-4, 6-3 win over unseeded Benjamin Becker.
Roddick's next match is against 15th-seed Lleyton Hewitt, who needed five sets to oust Richard Gasquet 6-4, 6-4, 4-6, 3-6, 6-3.
But sixth seed Tommy Robredo was ousted in the fourth round by Mikhail Youzhny, who will face Nadal in the quarters.
Third-round winners on the men's side were Marat Safin and number-14 Tommy Haas.—Agencies
