Staff Report

ISLAMABAD—Executive Director, Kashmir American Council, Washington, Dr. Ghulam Nabi Fai Saturday said that an International Seminar on "Right of Self-Determination" would be held on the sidelines of Second Session of the United Nations Human Rights Council that begins on September 18 in Geneva, Switzerland.
The session is to end on October 6. According to Kashmir Media Service Dr. Fai said that internationally known experts have been invited to present their views about the applicability of the principle of self- determination in the twenty-first century.
He said that the self-determination of peoples is a basic principle of the United Nation Charter which has been reaffirmed in the Universal Declaration of Human Rights and applied countless times to the settlement of international disputes.
Dr.Ghulam Nabi said that the applicability of the principle of the self-determination to the specific case of Jammu and Kashmir has been explicitly recognized by the United Nations.
It was upheld equally by India and Pakistan when the Kashmir dispute was brought before the Security Council, he added.
He warned that the principle of self-determination and the maintenance of international peace and security were inseparable.
He pointed out that the denial of the right to self-determination to the people of Jammu and Kashmir could have disastrous consequences.
He urged India to accept the ground reality and come forward with flexibility so that the issue could be resolved through peaceful means.
