Army win 7 events, Wapda 5 in national ranking athletics

ISLAMABAD—Pakistan Army won seven events while Wapda clinched five categories, besides a new national record, on the opening day of two day National Ranking Athletics Meet at Jinnah Stadium, Pakistan Sports Complex, on Thursday.
Parveen Akhter created a new national record of 44.40 metres to win the women’s javelin throw event while four other Wapda winners were Maryam Bashir (women’s long jump), Muhammad Irfan (men’s javelin throw), Zeenat Perveen (women’s shot put) and Irshad Fazal (men’s 800 metres).
Pakistan Army’s winners, all men were Muhammad Imran ( 200 metres), Haq Nawaz (400 metres hurdles), Safdar Nazir (steeplechase), Waseem Khan ( long jump), Ashraf Ali ( shot put), Nishat Khan ( 5000 metres) and Muhammad Anwar (high jump).
Pakistan Steel won three events all through the efforts of their lady athletes—Noshee Parveen (100 metres hurdles), Sumaira Zahoor (200 metres) andBushra Parveen (800 metres).
The Director General of Pakistan Sports Board, Brig. Arif Mehmud Siddiqui, was the chief guest on the occasion.—Agencies
