Ruling alliance maintains lead in Naib Nazim polls

ISLAMABAD—The results of the countrywide elections for district, tehsil and town naib nazim offices coming up, while the electoral process was marred by violence in some districts. The results of some city governments and districts have been announced. According to details Muttahida Qaumi Movement-backed Nasreen Jalil has been elected Naib Nazim of the Karachi City Government on Wednesday.
Idris Hanif was elected Naib Nazim of Lahore City Government, while Mohammed Afzal has been elected Naib Nazim of district Rawalpindi. Manzoor Ahmed Kakar was elected Naib Nazim of the Quetta City Government, Zafar Rajput elected Naib Nazim Hyderabad, Syed Mohammed won in Dadu, Ataullah Gunjyal in Khoshab and Dost Mohammed Khosa elected Naib Nazim in Dera Ghazi Khan.
Several incidents of violence were reported in various districts during the elections. In Debalpur tehsil of Okara electoral process was stopped after alleged arrest of a Naib Nazim candidate by the police. In Sheikhupura the election process was marred by disturbance after a firing incident. Police have booked 200 persons in the case. Naib Nazim elections in Punjab’s Kasur district were stopped after disturbance and unrest. Unknown culprits kidnapped a Naib Nazim candidate Malik Tasawwar Hayat in tehsil Bhalwal of district Sargodha.
APP adds: No candidate could muster the required votes for the slot of Naib Nazim City District Council as the elections for the eight Town Naib Nazims was completed here on Wednesday. The voting for the post of Niab Nazim City District Council held three times, remained inconclusive. Mian Amjad Yasin of PML-Q and Sheikh Muhmmad Yousaf of ARD are in the run for this post. However, Returning Officer Sadaqat Ullah Khan announced to defer the election for this post as no candidate could muster the required votes.
According to unofficial results, Mian Muhammad Akram and Nadeem Aftab Sindhar have already been elected naib nazims unopposed for Chak Jhumra and Layallpur Towns, respectively.
