Dueling spouses: Matthew Vs. Sarah Jessica!
From Jenny Peters
New York—In this year of celebrity break-ups and reshufflings, it’s nice
to know that there is one couple who can be happily together at home and
at war at work. “I’m Rope-a-Dope, you know? Gonna tire her out and then
pummel her in the seventh round,” chortles Matthew Broderick, when
confronted with the fact that his new comedy, the film adaptation of his
smash stage hit “The Producers,” hits theatres this Friday, the same day
as his wife’s latest, “The Family Stone.” It’s a fight to the death
(okay, not really) between Broderick and his spouse Sarah Jessica
Parker, but Broderick, always the nicest guy, says it really isn’t about
beating her at the box office.
“I don’t know, I hope they both do well! It would certainly make things
easier around the home. Be good for James.” James, their three-year-old
son, probably won’t know who wins the weekend (and frankly, “King Kong”
is going to kick both their asses), but the adults in their house
definitely will. But honestly, these two long-time actors (he’s been
working steadily since he was 17, she since 11, both in plays on
Broadway or otherwise first, films second) seem to really understand
that there is no competition, only pride, in the fact that both have had
such successful careers as working actors – and stars – for so long.
“She’s great in ‘The Family Stone.’ I love that movie, too,” says
Broderick, the proud husband. However, Broderick is very proud of his
on-stage and on-screen partner, Nathan Lane, as well. The pair
originated the roles of Bloom and Bialystock in the Broadway version of
“The Producers,” and are now encoring them in the film version of the
play (which was a stage version of the first film, complicated, we
know!). Plus, the joined-at-the-hip duo is currently starring every
night on Broadway in a sold-out revival of “The Odd Couple,” so it’s
easy for Broderick to joke about his second spouse.
“On Nathan, my comment on our sex life? Yeah well you know, we make that
joke a lot! We don’t go to bed angry, I mean, we don’t let fights fester
if we have disagreements. And we don’t have very many. Which isn’t to
say we’re just like totally placid all the time, you know? But I love
working with him, and I hope to keep doing it,” Broderick gushes. And
while Matthew and Sarah may be in competition for people’s moviegoing
cash this holiday season, the couple’s sex life is one area that Mrs.
Broderick isn’t too worried about competing with others who are close to
Mr. Broderick. “She likes me to have my other life. My dark, gay,
showbiz life,” Matthew chortles. |
