Quake challenge galvanized nation, says PM

ISLAMABAD—Prime Minister Shaukat Aziz Wednesday said the whole nation has galvanized and gelled together to meet the massive challenge posed by the October 8 earthquake. Talking to a delegation of Refugees International led by Farooq Kathwari at the PM House, he appreciated the help extended by Refugees International for the earthquake affectees and welcomed the extensive support by the international community.
He briefed the delegation about the relief, reconstruction and rehabilitation work being carried out by the government and said the Federal Relief Commission and Earthquake Reconstruction and Rehabilitation Authority (ERRA) have been set up. The Prime Minister briefed the delegation about situation in the region, with particular reference to the opening of five points across the LoC to facilitate the flow of people, relief material and goods.
This, he said, would also enhance linkages between the Kashmiris on both sides of the LoC. The Prime Minister said Pakistan wants a peaceful settlement of the Kashmir dispute in line with the wishes and aspirations of the Kashmiri people. The delegation visited the earthquake affected areas Tuesday and was working to mobilize support in the US for greater assistance for relief and reconstruction of these areas. Other members of the delegation included Frank Wisner former US Ambassador to India Kenneth Bacon President Refugees International and Mrs. Trish Malloch Brown Vice Chairperson Refugees International. Kathwari praised the government for its timely and effective management of the rescue and relief operations and specially appreciated the role of the army in this regard.
