PCSIR develops indigenous incinerators
ISLAMABAD—Pakistan Council of Scientific and Industrial Research (PCSIR)
is the first Pakistani organization to develop indigenous incinerators
of world standard.
WHO also recommends the incineration method for disposing off the
hospital-waste. USA and other European countries have developed
environmentally safe incinerators but these are very expensive for a
country like Pakistan. PCSIR has developed the incinerators with about80
percent locally available material and workmanship and at a remarkably
low price when compared to the imported incinerators.
So far six hospitals all around the country have been provided with
incineration facility with up to 100kg per hour burning capacity. The
performance of these incinerators has been up to the desired standards.
A total of 12 incinerators will be produced in two years and the project
will cost Rs39.75 million.
The production of 75 incinerators over the next five years is also
planned. Federal Minister for Science and Technology Chaudhry Nauraiz
Shakoor Khan has expressed the hope that the project will help in
reducing environmental degradation in the country.
The improper disposal of hospital waste can have potentially disastrous
effect on public health as diseases like AIDS and hepatitis can easily
spread from such negligence. The government is intensifying its efforts
to curb the menace of hospital waste by introducing state of the art
technology.—INP
