PPO asked to prefer daily wagers in new recruitments
Staff Report
ISLAMABAD—The Senate Standing Committee on Communications has observed
that strict merit policy should be observed for recruitments in the
Pakistan Post Office (PPO) department.
The observation was made by the Committee while discussing the criteria
for the residents of the less developed areas of Balochistan for
recruitment against vacant posts in PPO department.
The meeting was held under the chairmanship of Senator Kamil Ali Agha.
Director General PPO informed the Committee that the procedure for
recruitment against various posts in the department is the same as in
other areas of Pakistan. he said that different posts were advertised
for filling 84 vacancies from Balochistan aas per laid down criteria.
The Members of the Committee were of the view that only qualifications
for a post should be mentioned and that the requirement of 1st and 2nd
division in educational qualifications would deprive large number of
candidates belonging to the less developed areas of Balochistan to
compete.
DG PPO assured that rules for the less developed areas of Balochistan
would be relaxed and that in future, qualification would be mentioned in
the advertisement without mentioning percentage of marks for the post.
The matter was raised in the House by Senator Muhammad Ismail Buledi
which was referred to the Committee.
Regarding the non payment of wages to the daily wage employees of PPO,
Islamabad. It was told that all the daily wagers have been paid. The
committee was assured that this prompt payment will be made in future.
The daily wagers of PPO will have to appear and qualify the prescribed
competitive examination for regularization.
The committee recommended that the daily wage employees should be given
preference in the recruitments if they qualify the examination/test.
Chairman standing Committee pointed out some instances on such elements
that earn a bad name for the department. The committee appreciated the
idea of Postal Mall and called for computerization of the whole network
of post offices throughout the country to facilitate the customer and
eliminate the chances of corruption. It was also recommended that PPO
department should come with a report highlighting the problems and
issues which the department is facing so that an amicable solution could
be sorted out by the Committee.

(Retd) Javed Ashraf, Asfandyar Wali, Nawab Muhammad Ayaz Khan Jogezai
